The University of Cape Town Department of Construction Economics and Management, in conjunction with Getsmarter, are pleased to offer a Certificate Course in Guest House Management.

The second presentation is due to start in September 2009 and 252 students throughout South Africa are currently completing the first presentation of this course.

Need for the course

Guest house, bed & breakfast, boutique hotel and backpacker accommodation is the fastest growing accommodation sector in the tourism industry today. From its humble beginnings over a decade ago, the industry has now become a highly competitive and professional industry, demanding skills in and knowledge of professional hospitality practices as well as adherence to sound business principles.

The course in a nutshell

  • 10-week part-time course presented via the internet

  • Ideal for existing and prospective guest house managers and owners

  • Highly practical with several assignments completed during the course

  • Continuous assistance, monitoring and guidance is provided by the course convenor and course coordinator

  • Includes additional modules on short-term letting and preparing for the 2010 Soccer World Cup

  • Approximate study hours per week: three to six hours per week

This course has been designed for both current and prospective owners/managers of guest houses, backpackers, boutique hotels, self catering and bed & breakfast establishments.

  • Prospective owners will benefit from the essential practical knowledge required for both planning and establishing a guest house.

  • Existing managers will benefit from the in-depth knowledge gained regarding industry best practices and requirements in marketing, law, service, administration, operation and management.
