Cold weather resulted in electricity blackouts in various Johannesburg suburbs on Wednesday night, said Johannesburg City Power.

Due to the low temperatures people tended to overload the system by switching on heaters, said spokesman Louis Pieterse.

He re-assured electricity users in the city that everything was under control and that their power would be restored.

City Power was available to attend to individual problems throughout the city.

"The incidents are isolated. There are no major outages. We've been getting numerous calls from customers in Malvern, Bellevue, Kensington and Yeoville as a result of people overloading the system," Pieterse said.
